Do I need an app or a website?

One of the first decisions when creating a digital product is choosing where it should live. Does it need an app? Is a website enough? The answer depends less on technology trends and more on how people will use the product.

When a website makes more sense

A website is usually the best option when the main goal is to inform, present a brand, sell products, attract enquiries or let someone access content from any device without installing anything. It can also be enough for digital products that do not need an ongoing relationship with the user. A good website can offer accounts, forms, payments, bookings and many other features.

When an app may be better

An application has advantages when the product is part of a routine. Notifications, frequent use, access to phone features, camera, location or personalised experiences can justify an app. It can also make sense when the product needs a more controlled experience or when the main interaction happens several times a week or even every day.

It is not always a binary choice

In some projects, the website and app play different roles. The website can be the entry point and support discovery and SEO, while the application focuses on the experience of returning users. Before deciding, it helps to answer a few questions: how often will the product be used? What does the user need to do? Are notifications needed? Will there be device-specific features? How will users be acquired?

What role will SEO play? The answer should come from expected behaviour, not whichever technology seems most attractive. At HIBI, we design and develop both websites and applications. That allows us to evaluate the whole product before deciding where it should live. Sometimes the answer is a website. Sometimes an app. And sometimes both.
